The Perry & Webb Families of Tennessee and Kentucky

Notes

Thomas Speight Col.

I have been reading through this site as well as other genealogy info, and I feel have a now better understanding of the Speight history.

It seems that they were (still are) a large clan scattered througout theUnited Kingdom. In the late 1800's, some of the Speights came to theUnited States, first through the Carolinas and on to Texas.

Those that stayed in North and South Carolina were apparently landownerswith slaves whom they gave the family name (as was the practice of theday). There is a large population of African-American people namedSpeight and Speights today.

Those that went on to Texas obviously did well for themselves. There is aSpeight Airport in Waco, Texas and I believe there is a Speight Breweryin that region as well.

Speaking of the Speight Brewery, there is a thriving Speight Brewery in atown called Dunedin (named after a Scottish town, I believe) in NewZealand. This was obviously a group of Speight family members who optednot to go to the United States, but headed to New Zealand instead withothers from the Dunedin region in Scotland.

There is a Speightstown in Barbarados also.

What I don't know is anything about the German roots of the Speight name.I would guess that they were the predecessors of the British Speightfamily. Any thoughts on that, anyone?

Thanks for reviewing my rather simplistic history of the Speight name. Iknow there is much more to this great historic name.

Paul Redik was from Delbatye, Scotland. His son was William Redik ( 1530)also living in Delbatye..\Next I have is James Reddick (1630-1693) whowas in Nansemond Co, Va. He had a son James, that I know little about andthat James had a son Lemuel (1711-1775)who was a distant Grandfather..Ihave pretty good info from that point on...Lots of important people..Thisclan Stayed around Nansemond Co. Va and Gates Co., NC. for a good while, but some moved on further South to Ga. Ms, and Ar.

The following document, signed by Lemuel Riddick reads like an obituary. It refers to my ancestor, William Bass of Norfolk Co., Virginia.

"William Bass the Elder was deceased August ye 13th day in the Year ofour Lord 1741, age. 87. Beloved Sire of sons William Bass, Edward Bass,Joseph Bass, Thomas Bass and their faithful sister Mary Bass. Father alsoof son John Bass late deceased and daughter Kesiah, juner. late deceased. His Departing is Lamented and Mourned by family and friends.
LEMUEL RIDDICK (Rubric)

My questions are, Who was Lemuel Riddick? What is meant by the term"Rubric" as applied to Mr. Riddick? Was he, perhaps a clergyman?

I do not have the original of said document and have no idea where tolook for same. Perhaps if I knew who or what Lemuel Riddick was, maybe Imight have a better idea where to look for the original.

Even knowing who Mr. Riddick was might help to authenticate thetranscription of the document.

I would be much obliged for any help in this regard.

While our dates differ a little, I believe the Lemuel being discussed isthe one Walter mentioned. Lemuel ( b 1711 d. Dec.2 1775) was a trulyimportant revolutionary and historic figure. First, he was responsiblefor naming the town of Suffork. He was credited for picking that name inorder to influence the Gov to granting the charter. Suffolk was the homecounty in England of the Gov.

After Patrick Henry gave his famous " Give me Liberty of Give me Death"speech, several men were appointed to a committee to " prepare for thedefense " of our new country. Some of the individuals included were Geo.Washington, Nathan Hale, Ben Franklin, Patrick Henry, TomJefferson....and Lemuel Riddick!!! Unfortunately Lemuel died that Dec.and never reached the level of fame the other did or signed the Dec ofInd as he probably would have had he lived. Nearly any earlyRevolutionary period History mentions Lemuel. Lemuel had a son born inJuly 1763. Lemuels wife was Ester Robbins Pugh..Hope this helps.
