Isham Hodges

The following is quoted from a submission to rootsweb.com by Lowell GlenBrown and Danene Brown Vincent:

It is believed that Robert Hodges, born ca. 1700, was the father of IshamHodges I, although circumstantial evidence is all we have at this time.According to Robert L. Hodges, writer and editor of "Isham Hodges Notes",some researchers who have examined the early records "......conclude thatRobert Hodges is the first settler shown by records to have been livingwithin the modern limits of Franklin County Virginia" (excerpt fromJuanita Patton's book, "The Family Of Isham And Betsy Hodges FromVirginia To Tennessee").

In Landon Bell's book, "Sunlight on the Southside", (List of LunenburgTitheables) we find Isham Hodges I enumerated in the household of RobertHodges in 1748. Again in 1749 Isham Hodges is enumerated in the house ofRobert Hodges. In 1750 Isham Hodges I was enumerated separate from Robertleaving us to believe he had established his own household by this time.(This part of old Lunenburg County is now Franklin County, VA)

Isham Hodges I, over his lifetime, acquired much land from deeds, patents, and grants in the Chestnut Mountain and Chestnut Creek area ofwhat is now Franklin County Virginia.

Isham Hodges I's will was dated March 29, 1782 and was presented forprobate in the court of Henry County,Virginia, May 23 1782. In his willhe names his eleven children but does not mention a wife, leading us tobelieve she was deceased. One of the surviving sons was named IshamHodges also. (End of quote)

Robert Hodges

Some information indicates that he was born in England. Other researchers have
him born in VA.
Listing of sons other than Isham is from family file of Jennifer Lewis.

Most likely the father of Isham. This Robert was the one first heard of in Goochland Co., Area of VA in 1721 to do with a land grant or purchase. He later shows up in what is now the Franklin Co., VA area 1746/7. At that time this area was Lunenburg Co., VA. This is where we first see records of Isham Hodges also. In 1748 & 1749 the Lunenburg tithe list shows Robert Hodges & Isham Hodges in the same household. In 1750 Isham Hodges is enumerated separately leading us to believe this is when he established his own household.

The records were lost for 1751 so we lose track there. Isham Hodges' will was written in and recroded in Henry County, VA which had been formed from Luneuburg Co. This part of Henry County then later became Franklin Co VA where we find more records of the family.Data obtained from Ancestral Files

Robert Hodges

A Robert Hodges from Virginia was in the troops of Capt. Robert Bolling in the Revolution. It may possibly be this Robert.
