Burial: Unknown location, probably in an unmarked grave in the Shanklin Cemetery, near Shanklin Ford of Caney Fork Creek in Shanklin Cemetery, Sumner Co., TN

Per File No. 280 (W), Cert. No. 6514 Issued 2-28-1833, Act of 6-7-1832:
"App. for pension 8/14/1832
Enlisted 1/14/1777 under Capt. Henry (Harry) Conway, attached to 14th Regt. Va. under Col. Charles Lewis and Gen. Weeden. Marched thru Alexandria, Baltimore, Wilmington, to Philadelphia, thence to Trenton, to Brunswick, to Middlebrook. We took up line of march with Washington's army and proceeded to the high lands above New York. We went back towards Philadelphia, fought at Brandywine, Germantown, went into Winter Quarters at Valley Forge. In spring of 1778 the British left Philadelphia and the Americans overtook them at Monmouth, and had a hard battle. Later went into Winter Quarters at Morristown. As his term of service was nearly out, he with others, was detailed to Philadelphia to take 500 prisoners to Frederickstown, Md., and then discharged by Col. Samuel Webb. In 1781 he volunteered under Col. Lynch of Bedford County, Va., and was attached to Col. William Washington's Regt. (of Dragoons). Was at (battle of) Guilford Court House and then discharged Sept. 1781. He was under Col. Calloway at York (siege of Yorktown) at the surrender of Cornwallis. In 1778 he had been appointed 1st Corporal until 1779, he was promoted by Col. Davis to 2nd Sergeant. Was discharged in 1780 by Col. Webb. (His name appears on the rolls of the various organizations. William Woodall, clergyman and Meredith Hodge testified to his character. His claim was allowed."

Per "Some Early Settlers of Sumner County, Tennessee":

"Samuel Cochran married Sarah Northcutt, then living near Black Water River, Bedford County, Va., and she was living in Henry County, Va.

Samuel Cochran's family was the first Cochrans to come to Sumner County, Tennessee. They came with the John Mattox family and bought land (210 acres for $912.50 on January 6, 1819) near the Corinth Community on Caney Fork Creek (Caney Fork of Drakes Creek of Barren River). This joined the farm of his son-in-law, John Mattox.
