Jesse H. Stroud was born on the 12th of December, 1849, in RobertsonCounty, Tenn., son of William and Nancy (Rosson) Stroud. The father was aWelshman by descent, was born in South Carolina in 1798 and was a farmer.When about six years old he came to Tennessee with his uncle, JesseStroud, with whom he lived until sixteen years old. He became asuccessful farmer and owned 400 acres of land. He died in 1878. Themother was born in Tennessee in 1813 and died in 1883. Our subject wasreared on a farm, residing with his parents until twenty-three years old.In 1872 he married Sallie Coleman, born March 10, 1855, in RobertsonCounty, Tenn., and daughter of James and Margaret Coleman. They becamethe parents of these children: James F., Mary F., William I. and MyrtleA. The wife died in 1883, and July 17 of the following year he weddedJennie Connell, who was born in October, 1867, daughter of Richard andMargaret Connell. They have one child, Cora Mabel. In 1885 Mr. Stroudmoved on the old home place. He is industrious and a good manager andowns 400 acres of good land. He is a Democrat in politics and cast hisfirst vote for Horace Greeley.

(Itwas said that he was offered a position teaching mathematics at theUniversity of Virginia which he refused because he'd have to stay dressedup all the time. He surveyed most of Robertson County, TN. It was said hecould survey land all day and keep the figures in his mind and come homeat night and figure it all out. He was a great genius of his day. This was told to Bob Wilson by Grace Wilson Brooks, and alsoreported in Jean Dennison's book.In 1870 Robertson County, TN, census shows William and Mary farmedpersonal property worth $900.
